Aransas County was founded in 1871. It
was formed from portions of Refugio County and named for Rio Nuestra Senora de
Aranzazu, a Spanish outpost in early Texas.
As of 2010, the population of Aransas
County is 23,158.
Aransas County receives annual rainfall
averages of 36 inches. A hurricane in September 1919 damaged most of the city
of Rockport and the surrounding areas. Hurricane Carla’s eye moved northeast of
the county in September 1961.
Aransas County entered the regular
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in August 1971.
